“The Music of First Baptist”

The Music Ministry of First Baptist Church participated in a professional recording session, out of which came the CD “The Music of First Baptist.” The CD highlights the Sanctuary Choir, with other music by the Chapel Choir, Children’s’ Choirs, Joyful Noise, First Baptist Ringers and instrumentalists. The CD is available for purchase for $10. Contact Keith Reaves to place an order or for more information.

Adult Choir

The Sanctuary Choir is under the direction of Rev. Keith A. Reaves, Minster of Worship/Music at First Baptist since 1999. The 75-member choir sings for worship each week and presents seasonal and special programs throughout the year, including “Christmas at First Baptist” and an annual Maundy Thursday service.

The choir is accompanied by Joan Hill, organ, and Beverly Harris, piano.

Our Reuter pipe organ was originally installed in 1958 with a complete renovation in 2000. The organ has about 65 ranks and nearly 3000 pipes.

In 2013 the choir sang in concert with a full orchestra at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. In 2008 the choir accepted an invitation as the only church choir to sing for the New Baptist Covenant Meeting in Atlanta and in 2006 the choir accepted an invitation to participate in the International Church Music Festival in Chester, England.

Membership in the choir is open to anyone college-age and older. For more information, contact Keith at kreaves@fbcrome.org.

The choir rehearses Wednesdays at 6:45 p.m.

Youth Choir

The Youth Choir meets on Sunday mornings at 8:55 a.m. in the choir suite. Several meetings with parents indicated that families thought that Youth Choir was very important, but they also treasured having Sunday afternoons to spend together, so this solution was agreed up by parents and the youth and music ministries. John Uldrick will be offering a Parent Panel for interested parents during choir rehearsal each week, and child care will be provided for younger siblings, with advance notice.

The choir sings regularly on Sunday mornings and leads special worship services during the year. The choir performs a variety of music, having presented Moravian Lovefeasts, an Anglican Evensong, a Jazz Vespers service, a Taize Service and more. They pride themselves on their flexability and openness to all styles of music. This choir has performed on several choir tours, including singing at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC and on a mission trip to Puerto Rico.

Please contact Keith Reaves at kreaves@fbcrome.org for more information.

Children’s Choir

First Baptist has a complete graded choir program. Diane Lumpkin, Karen Foss and Janice Dismuke direct our Preschool choir for three and four year olds. Kay Bratton, a Kindermusic specialist and teacher at Berry Elementary, directs our Music Makers choir for children in Kindergarten and First Grade. They sing regularly on Wednesday nights and other special occasions. Keith Reaves, Minister of Worship/Music directs the Children’s Choir for children in second through sixth grades. They sing regularly on Sunday mornings and present special programs throughout the year, including “Christmas at First Baptist” with a full orchestra.
